Can We Identify What Causes Nausea?

What causes nausea is a question people have been asking literally for centuries, ever since the start of recorded medical history. The phenomenon has been known for the whole of that long time, and yet no definitive answers have been found to either this question or the obvious follow up of what can be done to prevent it. Recent researchers have claimed that there are several hundred possible potential cause factors in a case of nausea, and many of these are extremely difficult to diagnose.

There are some causes of nausea which are blindingly obvious, especially in the way they cause the feeling and then force the body to vomit poison from the system. If you eat food which is contaminated with a bacterial infection, this can cause one of the most dangerous types of nausea. It is difficult to remove all of the toxins from the body without extended vomiting which puts extreme pressure on the stomach. This can lead to further complications, even though most of the stomach pains which follow are simply a reaction to what has happened, and are not evidence of any further problems or physical damage.

Less serious causes include the old favorite of pregnancy. It is still not entirely known why nearly four in every five women experience feelings of nausea at some point during their pregnancy, but it certainly known that they do. It appears as though this is a purely natural phenomenon and that the body has a genuine reason for behaving as it does. This is probably exacerbated by factors in the modern environment such as high stress levels and radiation from cell phones and computers, but these are certainly not primary causes as the phenomenon has been around much longer than they have.

If you want to gain the full overview of what causes nausea you will also need to consider the fact that mental factors may well be involved. The mind is capable of having a far reaching effect on the body, and especially on the emotions and the brain chemistry. It is known that psychological factors can cause feelings of nausea, and if this becomes a long standing problem it will be necessary to seek help from a therapist. Counseling and cognitive therapy can often produce good results over time, unless the trauma is buried deeply within the mind. In this case, you will need a regression type of deep therapy.

It is vital to determine what is causing nausea in any given case, because it is just possible it could also lead to something more serious. There could be an ongoing stomach problem developing, which will grow unabated if you simply concentrate on solving the problem of the nausea. It may be that the stomach is in a permanently acidic state due to improper eating habits, possibly with an ulcer developing. If nausea persists for a period of more than a few weeks, there will definitely be an underlying cause of some kind which will need to be identified.

As we now know that what causes nausea can be literally hundreds of different factors, there needs to be a two fold approach to trying to deal with it. Firstly, you need to put in to place treatments which do not depend on an exact diagnosis, because they would help eradicate the condition no matter what the exact cause was. Then, you need to try and identify the cause as closely as possible, for the simple reason that some causes will definitely need extra treatment. There is no simple answer to what causes nausea.
