How Nausea And Vomiting Are Diagnosed And Treated

Nausea and vomiting are among the most common complaints referred to physicians in the developed world, and the most significant fact of all is these cases are only the tip of the iceberg. There are far more cases which are never reported than there are which do reach the physician, although it is of course impossible to give a definitive percentage. There are so many possible causes of this condition that it needs a long and careful diagnosis, and even when this is done there are many cases which simply defy explanation.

There is little which has changed over the centuries with nausea, as it is a condition which has been recorded since the time when medical records were first kept. The only factor which has changed is that new technology can have an effect on how people feel. Machines which were used in factories during the industrial age were capable of bringing on nauseous feelings, but now that so many people work with electronic equipment there are even greater dangers. The effect of computer screens and cell phones on human beings is still hotly debated, but there is every possibility that they can lead to feelings of nausea.

The presence of nausea is usually a sign that vomiting will soon occur, but this is by no mean certain. Sometimes, the patient is able to lie down peacefully and fall asleep, and when they wake up the feelings of pain can be completely gone. The only cases where vomiting is virtually certain are those where food poisoning has been an issue. This will be caused by a bacterial infection in the body, and the body's own defense systems will be called in to force this out. Vomiting will be induced, and this can last for hours or even a day or more.

There can also be far less painful and potentially damaging reasons for nausea. One of the most common causes of nausea and vomiting is pregnancy, which suggest that there are times when it is little more than a natural function of the body. A many as four out of five pregnant women will get nauseous feelings at some stage during pregnancy, usually during the first two months. There are extremely rare cases where this becomes serious enough to need medical intervention, but these cases are far outside of normal experience.

The most worrying cases of nausea are often those with no discernible physical cause. The problem will often be buried within the mind, and this takes the patient into the little understood world of psychology and the workings of the mind. The causes may be relatively easy to determine with basic counseling, in which case a treatment such as cognitive therapy will have every chance of working, and of building up a healthy mental condition within the patient. If the causes are related to a trauma which is buried more deeply, it could take a lot of probing work to identify it and bring it to the surface.

The good news is that most cases of nausea and vomiting are relatively harmless and will pass in time. Only in rare cases will the problem be prolonged, and the overall health of the patient be put at risk. Vomiting obviously puts pressure on stomach muscles, and this can lead to other complications, while there is always a risk of choking and breathing difficulties. The most damaging effect over time is that minerals will be lost from the body, and this will need to be countered by dietary provisions, and the possible use of nutritional supplements.

There are various treatments for nausea which have been put forward by those who believe in taking a proactive stance and trying to combat the illness rather than letting it take its course. Some of these are nothing more than simple common sense steps to take, such as avoiding stressful situations, taking time out to rest the body, and eating regular and balanced meals. Others incorporate deeper forms of relaxation therapy, along with certain nutritional balances aimed at inducing rest and peaceful feelings. There are also drug treatments which aim to reduce symptoms, but as these mask the illness and cover the possible cause they need to be used sparingly.

There are still thousands of cases of nausea and vomiting which are never formally diagnosed, and in these cases there is little which can be done other than to follow general principles of good living and adequate rest, allied to proper diet and a sensible sleeping pattern. Watch out for any environmental factors which could be causing issues, such as over-use of cell phones or being too close to the computer screen. If the problem persists, don't hesitate to seek medical advice as it is possible that there is something underneath which will need medication. This should also stop the nausea and vomiting.
